So if flight model/actual flying is not critical for you - try out X, it is a great game. One issue is (and reason why i still return to ED from time to time) ED's flight model, along with how cockpit/controls are done are pretty unique, there are no other games like this and X series with its exceedingly primitive flight model are nowhere near it. And while the game is immesurably smaller it is not procedurally generated random like in ED, there are things to find that make exploration of limited but still large universe IMO much more fun than in ED. And of course you can do all the regular explore/trade/fight stuff too. Want to control entire fleet? Sure, just need the money to buy it. Want to build entire trade/industrial empire? You can. Want to blow up stations or wipe out entire systems? No one is stoping you. If you didn't buy the add-on before October 26, it's now locked off forever, but at least you'll get everything else without having to spend £20/$30.X series give even more freedom, i did not spend much time playing X4, but X3 with all the drawbacks it had still felt much more "alive" then ED, and allowed much more freedom in general ( because no multiplayer limitations). This rather pretty cosmetic reward will be the only feature from Horizons that remains exclusive to players who owned the expansion before it was incorporated into the base game. It's visually similar to Elite Dangerous and takes place in a similar futuristic type of. As a "huge thank you" to long-time Horizons players, they will receive an exclusive azure ship paint colour, compatible with all ships currently in the game.
